How can I help the painter?

This is a common question we receive when we arrive for a painting estimate.  People care about their project and want to make sure their job goes smoothly. request the homeowner, remove family portraits and collector glass wear from the work area.  Special request will need to be known, such as time of arrival,  security codes if needed or problem areas for the painters.


Having the color choices for the paint to be used is also needed.  Preferably at least 48 hours before the painters arrive.  To help the painter, it is always essential to have your colors picked before they arrive to complete your project.  Often times the repairs are minimal and they can start to paint very quickly.  If the painters arrive and do not have paint, the job comes to a stand still.

Removing Family portraits’ and glass wear stored in curios and on tables will save time and also provide a clutter free area for the painters.  We all have special items that mean the world to us.  Theses items should always be placed in an out of the way area for any workers.  This allows more freedom for the workers to complete their project quicker and more efficiently.  As for any project which you have contractors in your home or business, clearing the areas to be worked in will speed up the process.

Lastly, feel free to let any painting company working in your home or business know what your expectations are of them.  Where you would like them to set up their equipment and tools and what areas not available for them.  Knowing the requirements of you the consumer provide the painter a better understanding of what is to be done.  Thank you.

     Do you know who will be at your home or business when you hire a contractor?  Does it matter?  Aren’t they all the same?

     The answers to these few questions may save you a lot of money and frustration.  They are the first contact a client will have with a contractors workers.  They will represent the people you hire to solve your problems.  Are they qualified, trustworthy and reliable?

     I have seen many employees enter a home or business and complete the exact work you wish for and without a blip.  On the other hand, I have seen employees ruin a project and everything connected to the job quicker then you can imagine.

     In our business, we determine who will be there.  We hire them and we support them.  Our employees are not painters hired off the street and have worked for various companies.  They do not bring old skills, good or bad with them to our business.  Our company is based on the concept that we hire good people and train them.  No previous professional skills or habits.  How does this work?  We hire people who are GOOD and possess the work and people skills to complete the task we desire.  They are very trainable and want to become the best they can in their field of endeavor.  They are friendly, smart and willing to help in every situation.  That we believe are the people who will be there.

Working as Tegrey Family of Coatings for 18+ years has taught us many things.  One is the client needs to know where the paint for their project comes from,  who gets it and what does it cost.

We can tell you our company will buy your paint for you and deliver it to your project location.  In our initial interview with you, we will find the project to be painted, what it will require to complete it correctly and how much paint will be needed.  These few simple questions answered, makes a difference on how your project is completed.  The substrate that needs to be painted will require a certain paint formulated specifically for it.  Drywall, concrete, wood or vinyl all require a deferent paint formula.  The number of coats will require two coats of paint as specified by the PDCA (Painting, Decorating Contractors of America). Our National organization who also writes the standards for groups as the AIA.  Often times, we need to apply a primer coat and or three coats for the best coverage.  This determines the amount of paint we order and bring to the work site.

The estimate we provide you will contain the cost for all primers and paint we will need to complete your project. Any additional paint or color change will be added onto your invoice.  The price we pay for your paint is discounted for us as we are a professional contractor using many hundreds of gallons of paint and primer each year.  The cost of the paint is then added onto your estimate for your project. Our company does not add onto the cost of paint for your project.  Often there are business who add onto the cost of materials as they believe it is a way to make additional profit.  We also request the client not purchase their own paint, as they believe they are saving money on the project.  This is almost never true.  The discounts offered by paint companies are usually still less then our purchase price.  We use only the highest grade of paints as we feel the project we complete meets our expectations as well as the clients.

We attended every seminars and convention related to our business in our third year of business. Spending 25% of our income on learning was a challenge. We ate a lot of beans and rice that year. Now that you know a little about us, we can discuss how we actually accomplish our goals. Having 17 years in business, we should be running our business without the daily stress and strain. We started by keeping every clients information handy and ready to use. My wife Peggy Miller (President) believes in the old fashion way of doing business. Everything is hand written and kept on file forever. Today we have the technology to eliminate much of this work. I am Terry Miller (COO), of Tegrey Family of Coatings Inc. My job is to make sure everything runs right without problems.

To start, we purchased the PDCA Pacer program estimating program. This allows us to keep all clients information on hand and ready to use. When someone calls us for an estimate and tells us we worked for them before, we are ready to go. Their info and what we did last is recorded and any special requirements are there to use. There are many programs similar to PACER and work very well. The idea is to have all the info on hand from a previous client for future use. People are amazed that we remember them from 10-15 years ago. That my friend is a plus. People want to be remembered.

If you’re new in business, now is the time to start your savings program. Collect all the business information about your client you can. File it accordingly. Make it one of your most valuable assets of your business. This list can be used for remembering Birthdays, Anniversary’s, pets and anything else that the clients want you to know. After all, you are the business who solves their problems. You make them smile and feel good about their selves. Hence, you make love to them like no other. Only you can satisfy their needs and create overwhelming results in what you provide.

The very first moment you meet a client for the estimate, make sure it is memorable, because it will be if done right.

How do you run a business from the beach?  Is this possible?  Who would even do business with you on the beach?

Our experience as a painting contractor with 17 years experience, thousands of satisfied clients and working 24 / 7 has taken us to this point.  Of course we don’t paint on the beach, or even live or work close to a beach.  Confusing as it seems, it is quite simple.  We have learned how to run our business by gaining the knowledge and equipment to complete the task at hand.  We started quite a few years ago, adapting new technology into our business of painting. We started with the Blackberry phones and presently use the iPhones, iPad and Lenovo ThinkPad for our business.  Our computers are loaded with the largest capacity available for them and a very high-end estimating program for our clients approval.


Having a plan and working the plan will help you grow your business.  Using the technology to complete the task at hand will give you opportunity to venture where few others go.  At Tegrey Family of Coatings, we have set up a virtual office as well.  This allows our company to answer our phones 24 / 7 with a live person.  After all, who wants to be put on hold for 26 minutes as I have recently dealt with.  What better way is there then setting up appointments or completing an estimate for a client then on a beautiful beach in your home town, or another country!  This can all be accomplished by gaining the knowledge, software and hardware to do this.  You can also run your business from a beach and do what you love, when you want.  Do it now and be amazed with the results.  A conversation with anyone in a perfect climate, no stress and a cold drink while relaxing has to be a positive thing.  Don’t you agree?

Tegrey Family of Coatings has purchased a new window cleaning system this past year. Why would a business who’s business is 80 % painting do this? Who cleans their windows today anyway? Why waste the money?
Approximately 50% of the homes we pressure wash, people ask if we clean windows. I have always said no as this is a specialty business that requires skills and equipment we did not have. I decided to investigate this business and after speaking with the professionals and suppliers in window cleaning, we discovered it would be a great fit for our business. We can train our employees and purchase all the equipment we needed to add this onto our company services. The cost was a substantial investment and needed the right client to make it happen.
At Tegrey Family of Coatings, located Canton Ohio, we are a perfect fit. Our clients are very particular on the quality of work they require and they love their homes. That answers the question of who cleans their windows. People who care and want the best for their homes. Networking, a waste of time?

Is it worth all the trouble?
We are A simple Image Canton Ohio business that supplies painting, pressure washing and deck refinishing.  We have six employees who basically Love their job.  You might ask, what does that have to do with networking. We have been around for sixteen years and entering into our third record year in a row! We do not advertise in the local phone books and our advertising is 1/3 cost of what it was five years ago. 
We have set our goals to produce the best product to our specific client at the lowest cost for what we do.  Creating true Value for our client.  They know us and trust us.  
All said, we are networking every day. If there is an event that makes sense to us and correlates with our goals, we are there.  Our networking is based around weekly meetings and gatherings of the three Chamber of Commerce we belong to as well as our Local Chapter of BNI, and  anything that will introduce us to great businesses. 
Why we use networking in our business is not directly money related but referral based.  We feel the networking we do will give us the opportunity to refer the best businesses in our area. The secondary thing would be that they refer us as we’ll.  Who we refer is valuable enough to us that we spend a big percent of our income for developing associations with the people we network with.  We must develop a trust that only comes from knowing one another. 
 We do not go to any function to pass out our coveted business cards.  We don’t strike up a conversation to see how we can sell someone our business.  When we introduce ourselves to you, our first action is to learn about you and your business.  We want to learn if there is any connection between us that may lead to helping your business.  That my friend is much more satisfying then shoving my card into your pocket and telling you to call me because we can solve all your problems or sell you the greatest product since the iPhone!
The next time your in a networking event, use the two pocket system. One pocket is for the businesses we really want to know and grow with. One we feel we can develop a lasting relationship with.  The second Pocket is for the cards shoved in my face and you need us business card.  I take one back to the office and start working on ways to make the right connection for our clients , the other usually doesn’t make it out the door.
